FAQs

  • Can I install the system myself?

Many parts bolt or glue together but some parts do require the stainless steel tube to be drilled and tapped, whilst other parts, such as the handrails, may need cutting to length, so if the system you plan is a complex one, we would recommend using an experienced installer. Stainless steel is harder than mild steel when it comes to drilling and cutting and sometimes specialist equipment is required.

  • Is all stainless steel the same?

No, there are several different types of stainless steel. The most commonly used for these types of products are Grades 304 and 316. The chemical compositions are different in each.

    • Grade 304
This is generally used for internal applications and in areas which are not exposed to chemicals or extreme conditions.
    • Grade 316
This is generally used for external systems, unless you live within in 20 miles of the coast; in an area of heavy pollution; or around swimming pools, when 316 Mirror finish should be used. Airborne contamination is washed off a mirror finish much better and this helps to prevent staining.
  • What diameter is the handrail?

Our handrails are 42.4 mm and 48.3 mm diameter, so you can pick the one you prefer.

  • How long are the handrails you supply?

We supply handrail tubes in lengths of 5.8m, 3m, 1.5m, 1.2m and 1m, which can be cut down to size or joined together with connectors.

  • How are the handrail ends finished?

We offer a choice of ends including wall brackets, a choice of closed end caps and scroll ends. Liveconfigurator will offer you a choice.

  • Do I need to buy my glass from you?

No, you can either buy it later, or elsewhere. However our glass is very competitively priced.

  • What is the lead time?

Lead times can vary, but our stainless steel parts are usually in stock. Glass can take up to two weeks to prepare and cut to size for you.

  • Do the systems meet Building Regulations?

Building Regulations must always be taken into account with both new properties and renovation. The safety of any handrail or balustrade is always something that must be considered. Liveconfigurator will always keep you informed as you click through it. Domestic, commercial and areas where people congregate all have different loading requirements. If you have any doubts at all you should always check with your Local Building Inspector. For further information, Part K and Part M can be checked at:  F.H. Brundle – Pro Railing

  • How high is the handrail?

We make them to conform with Building Regulations and they are 1100 mm high on the straight and 900 mm high on stairs. Some systems also offer alternative heights which may not be compliant; however this information will be given to you as you use Liveconfigurator.

  • Do you supply glass infills?

We do supply toughened glass infills for all our systems. You can also have a choice of different coloured glass. We also offer laminated glass for some of our systems.

  • Are the glass panels a standard size?

You have a choice of options when filling in the form. Depending on the lengths you require, you can select all the glass panels to be all equal sizes (on each length), or you can have standard sized glass panels with a make up panel at either end or at both ends. You can select the option which best suits your needs.

  • Do we need to fit the glass clamps to the posts?

We supply this system with ready-assembled posts with glass clamps to take 10mm toughened glass already fitted. This saves time and avoids having to drill holes in the posts.

  • Does stainless steel ever need cleaning?

Whilst stainless steel is very durable and corrosion resistant, it is not self-cleaning and will require regular maintenance. Cleaning intervals will depend on location and the local environment. They may be from 4 times a year in rural, suburban or residential areas where the stainless steel is washed by rain, and up to weekly where is isn’t washed by rain and is in industrial areas or close to the sea. We sell cleaning products and cloths in our range. More information may be found in our Pro-Railing catalogue which can be found at http://prorailing.co.uk

  • How is the stainless steel finished?

Most of our products are a 320 Grit finish. This is a satin polish. We do have a selection of products with other finishes and many of our products could be supplied in an 800 grit Mirror finish if required. Higher grit numbers are smoother and lower grit numbers are less shiny. Mirror finish is suitable for coastal installations.

  • Do you sell fixing bolts?

We have a wide range of fixings and drill bits available. We advise that you always use stainless steel bolts, anchors and screws for our stainless steel balustrades and railings. As we don’t know what you will be fixing to, you will need to decide on the most appropriate fixings for your particular location.

  • How do I know where the posts should be fitted?

After an order is placed, we will send a fully-detailed set of drawings showing the layout.
