We are a family business and have been trading since 1889, with an ethos of being friendly, helpful, and providing the best customer service we possibly can. We have many thousands of satisfied customers all over the UK. We prefer to build long term relationships with all our customers.

Just follow the steps in our website. You can select the overall length or post centre to post centre length. We have Information available which may be useful as you are guided through the form.

Sorry, but we do not install. However there are suppliers and installers in most areas who will be happy to help.

Always work to the measurements provided in the drawings. Please note that whoever installs your new system, it is essential to install to the measurements on the drawings we provide  Please lay out the posts positions correctly to ensure the overall length is correct.

Fixing bolts can be found listed amongst our Accessories, but because we do not know what material you are fixing into we cannot include the fixing bolts. You must decide which bolts you need to fix your system securely.

We simply supply the parts you need to do your project, so unfortunately we do not have surveyors to come and visit your site. We do have information about measuring and installation on out Help and Advice pages.

You should arrange for the builders/installers to install only after your goods have arrived and been checked by yourself.

You may find it possible to break your layout down into several sections which will conform to the templates, but otherwise please contact your local F H Brundle branch or email us at: A sketch of the layout you need along with the dimensions will be required. We will always do our best to help or advise but cannot guarantee that we can draw every scenario. You can also find individual parts on our website at:

We will add additional layout templates from time to time.

We have branches around the UK. Please contact your nearest branch and speak to one of our team, who will be happy to help with any questions you may have. Emailing us with a layout sketch of your site, along with your measurements and requirements, plus any photos can also be very useful. Email us at

Our aim is to make sure everything arrives in perfect condition, but you should always check everything soon after it arrives. Do please notify us of any problems as soon as possible on the day you receive delivery.

If you have an appropriate vehicle then you are welcome to collect at your nearest branch by prior arrangement.

Load Types:

The loads are expressed in kN/m (kilo Newton metre) in simple terms this is a quantity very similar to 100Kg (220lb) of pressure per metre length. If for example it is stated that there is 1.0kN/m it will be approximately the equivalent of one person weighing 100kg putting their full weight on one metre length.

There are three basic loads that are required to be met;

(a) Horizontal loading on the handrail
(b) vertical loading on the handrail
(c) loading on the infill.

The horizontal loading on the handrail is called a “uniformly distributed line load” or UDL (basically meaning that the load needs to be calculated in a fashion that allows for even distribution of the pressure along the complete length of the element, as opposed to the sum of the load applied to one point). The vertical load on the handrail is composed of both a UDL vertical load and a point load. The load on the infill, be it glass, metal or other, is tested and calculated in two separate ways; a distributed load and a “point load”. This means the infill of the railing, balustrade or barrier must be able to withstand an evenly distributed pressure as well as a concentrated pressure on a small point.

The loads are tested or calculated whereby the maximum deflection under pressure must not exceed 25mm.

Areas of Building Usage and the Loads that Apply

You can divide regulations into these basic areas:

Domestic & Residential (Single Family Home), Internal Stairs/Landings Etc.

In which case the handrail pressure must be able to take 0.36kN/m. For external balconies and in light office areas non susceptible to overcrowding this is doubled to 0.74 kN/m. This can be compared to having one averagely weighing person 75kg applying the full force of their body on every metre of the balcony.

Public Areas Such as Retail Areas, Bars and Restaurants

The handrail pressure must be able to take 1.5 kN/m. This is doubled to a dramatic 3.0 kN/m in areas such as malls, discotheques and areas susceptible to overcrowding.

In relation to the loads that apply in these areas on the glass or infill panels we will show here the severe of the two loads which is the concentrated point load:

Point Load for Domestic & Residential (Single Family Home) Internal Stairs/Landings Etc.

0.25kN/m. For external balconies and in light office areas non susceptible to overcrowding 0.5kN/m.

Point Load for Public Areas

On all public areas such as retail areas, malls, discotheques, areas susceptible to overcrowding, bars and restaurants the point load must be able to take 1.5kN/m.

When dealing with glass barrier one more element must be taken into account and that is impact resistance of the glass. A minimum of 10mm glass should be employed in balcony areas that are wider than 1.5m.

If you are in any doubt about what you need to do, or to conform with, on your own project, we always recommend that you consult your local Planning Office and/or a structural engineer.

Please note that that some cutting, drilling and gluing may be required to assemble your system. The posts have the glass clamps and base plates already fitted, and we supply enough products to complete your railings to the sizes you have provided all at excellent value. All our glass is supplied to the correct sizes for your requirements.

Many parts bolt or glue together, but some parts do require the stainless steel tube to be drilled and tapped, whilst other parts, such as the handrails, may need cutting to length, so if the system you plan is a complex one we would recommend using an experienced installer. Stainless steel is harder than mild steel when it comes to drilling and cutting and sometimes specialist equipment is required.

We supply handrail tube in lengths of 6 metres and 3 metres, which can be cut down to size or joined together with connectors.

We offer a choice of ends including wall brackets, a choice of closed end caps and scroll ends. Liveconfigurator will offer you a choice.

No, you can either buy it later, or elsewhere. However our glass is very competitively priced.

You will receive an accurate fully-detailed set of drawings showing the layout. The dimensions on the layout drawings should always be carefully followed, otherwise you may experience difficulties. We have allowed some tolerance for such things as glass tolerances in our measurements.

Building Regulations must always be taken into account with both new properties and renovation. The safety of any handrail or balustrade is always something that must be considered. Liveconfigurator will always keep you informed as you click through it. Domestic, commercial and areas where people congregate all have different loading requirements. If you have any doubts at all you should always check with your Local Building Inspector. For further information, Part K and Part M can be checked at:

We do supply toughened glass infills for all our systems. You can also have a choice of different coloured glass. We also offer laminated glass for some of our systems.

You have a choice of options when filling in the form. Depending on the lengths you require, you can select all the glass panels to be all equal sizes (on each length), or you can have standard sized glass panels with a make up panel at either end or at both ends. You can select the option which best suits your needs.

Lead times can vary, but our stainless steel parts are usually in stock. Glass can take up to two weeks to prepare and cut to size for you.

We supply this system with ready-assembled posts with glass clamps to take 10mm toughened glass already fitted. This saves time and avoids having to drill holes in the posts.

Whilst stainless steel is very durable and corrosion resistant, it is not self-cleaning and will require regular maintenance. Cleaning intervals will depend on location and the local environment. They may be from 4 times a year in rural, suburban or residential areas where the stainless steel is washed by rain, and up to weekly where is isn’t washed by rain and is in industrial areas or close to the sea. We sell cleaning products and cloths in our range. More information may be found in our Pro-Railing catalogue which can be found at

No, there are several different types of stainless steel. The most commonly used for these types of products are Grades 304 and 316. The chemical compositions are different in each.

Grade 304 This is generally used for internal applications and in areas which are not exposed to chemicals or extreme conditions.

Grade 316 If you live within 20 miles of the coast, want a railing around your swimming pool, or live close to a city centre, then we would always recommend using grade 316. Many people prefer to use 304 for internal rails and 316 for external applications. Grade 304 offers good value in appropriate locations.

Our handrails are 42.4 mm and 48.3 mm dia., so you can pick the one you prefer.

We make them to conform with Building Regulations and they are 1100 mm high on the straight and 900 mm high on stairs. Some systems also offer alternative heights which may not be compliant; however this information will be given to you as you use Liveconfigurator.

Most of our products are a 320 Grit finish. This is a satin polish. We do have a selection of products with other finishes and many of our products could be supplied in an 800 grit Mirror finish if required. Higher grit numbers are smoother and lower grit numbers are less shiny. Mirror finish is suitable for coastal installations.

We have a wide range of fixings and drill bits available. We advise that you always use stainless steel bolts, anchors and screws for our stainless steel balustrades and railings. As we don’t know what you will be fixing to, you will need to decide on the most appropriate fixings for your particular location.
